Mark & Lyndsay's Tour of Ireland 2005
July 4th/5th 2005
Set off from Glasgow at 23:00 on 4th July destined for Stranraer. Caught the 05:20 ferry from Stranraer to Belfast arriving at 07:10.
We pulled into Rosemary's at 07:30 grabbing breakfast and sleeping until 12:30. We took in the sights of Carrickfergus and after a walk and some shopping we popped up to Knockagh Monument.
Dinner in the Chinese resturaunt in Carrickfergus with Rosemary before we visited my Granny and Granda Craig.
July 6th 2005
Left Rosemary's at 11:00 and arrived at the Giant's Causeway at approximately 13:00. After a walk down to the causeway and a quick look through the wee shop we headed along the coast to Portrush for a wander on the East Strand. Stopping by Portstewart at 16:00 we made it to Benone for 18:00 where we found Benone Golden Sands and set up our tent, cooked up some dinner and went for a walk on the beach.
July 7th 2005
Leaving Benone at 12:00 we drove through Londonderry, crossed the border into the Republic of Ireland and stopped to fill up the car with petrol. We stopped again in Raphoe to exchange our Pounds for Euros. Stopped in at Donegal for a walk and lunch (bacon rolls in the car-park) before continuing to Ballyshannon and searched for a camp-site. Dinner in The Loft Resturaunt in Ballyshannon where Lyndsay didn't understand a word the waitress said.
July 8th 2005
Out of Ballyshannon at 12:00 and drove through Sligo but didn't stop. By 13:30 we had made it to Lough Key Forest Park near Boyle. Had some lunch and set up the tent before going for a walk around the massive park. We took in sights of the lough, passed a visitor centre and climbed up to the top of a look-out tower.
July 9th 2005
Left campsite at 12:00 and stopped off in Castlerea for lunch. Arrived in Galway and pitched tent at 15:20. Walked down to the beach just outside campsite.
July 10th 2005
Very hot day. Walked into Galway city centre at 11:30 (approx 5km). Walked around shops and had lunch at 14:30. Back to the campsite for 17:30 and took the car to the cinema to watch Batman Begins (and cool off a bit).
July 11th 2005
Drove down to Limerick and stopped for lunch and visited the tourist information looking for details on campsites. Decided on one in Killaloe on the banks of Lough Derg (Lough Derg Holiday Park). Went swimming in the lough after pitching the tent.
July 12th 2005
Went for a walk around Killaloe although I didn't feel too good (probably the heat). Tried to stay out of the sun for the rest of the day. Had dinner in the pub/resturaunt at the campsite (fantastic steaks).
July 13th 2005
Drove to Cork. Walked around the shops in the city centre before deciding on a campsite. We chose Blarney Caravan & Camping Park, just outside Blarney (though we never visited the Blarney Stone, what kind of tourists are we?). Played 18-hole pitch & putt which was part of the caravan/camping park before dinner. Had mussels for starters and Haggis & potatoes for dinner (not bad for a few wee stoves).
July 14th 2005
Packed up and left by 12:00. Stopped for lunch in Rathcormack on the road to Dublin. Made it to the campsite (North Beach Caravan and Camping Park, Rush (just north of Dublin)) for 18:00. Walked along the beach after dinner and met some crabs.
July 15th 2005
Drove to Skerries for walk among the rock pools. Food shopping in Rush before taking a train to Dublin where we had lunch and walked around the shops. Returned to the campsite in time for dinner.
July 16th 2005
Day 12 in the Big Brother tent, no, wait...
Packed up the tent and left by 12:00. Sun was beating down again. Breakfast in Ardgillian Castle car park with a walk around the castle grounds before driving up through Drogheda where we stopped for lunch. Drove up towards Dundalk where we got lost in the diversions and decided to head across the border into Northern Ireland. After checking out the caravan site in Banbridge we headed across to Newcastle in seach or a campsite. Searched up the coast but no-where suitable. In the end we returned to Belfast and stayed the night with Rosemary.
Stay tuned for more of Mark & Lyndsay's adventures.
